What is Just-In-Time Access?
Just In Time Access is a privileged access strategy that eliminates standing privileges the permanent administrative access that many users hold but rarely use and replaces them with time limited, purpose specific access grants. When an administrator needs to perform a maintenance task, they request access, it is granted for a defined window, and it is automatically revoked when the window expires. This dramatically reduces the attack surface by ensuring that even if an account is compromised, the attacker cannot leverage persistent admin privileges. JIT access is a core component of a Zero Standing Privileges model and is supported by PAM platforms like CyberArk and Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management.
